“Surrogates” was a big hit at the box office in 2009, earning just under 15 million in its opening weekend, and ultimately raking in over 38.5 million over the entirety of its initial run.

The film is a science fiction action movie which is set, as most of the popular films of the genre are, in a futuristic society. People in this future rarely leave their homes, as technological advances make it possible to perform all necessary tasks from the comfort of your own living room.

When it does become necessary to actually interact with someone else in the world, meetings are done via “surrogate robots” that project a perfect image of the person who controls them. In this way, everybody is a supermodel. Everybody is a movie star. And for movie audiences, everybody can relate to this fantasy, which is why it is understandable that the movie had such interest.

Bruce Willis, whose presence in a movie like this always prepares you perfectly for the action that is to come, plays Tom Greer, a police officer who must venture out into the world for the first time in years when a murder — the first murder in years — takes place. As the imperfect Willis ventures out into the world of the beautiful surrogates, he acts as the audience’s surrogate, representing all of our own inherent insecurities, as he tries to unearth the truth behind what is actually going on.

The movie also features familiar stars like James Cromwell (“Babe”) and Ving Rhames, who appeared with Willis in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” as well as Australian actress, Radha Mitchell, a relative newcomer to American audiences.

In 2009, with advances in real-life technology moving along at such a rapid pace, many films were able to capitalize on this new-found fascination of audiences with what the world of tomorrow might encompass. “Surrogates,” along with similar films like “Push” and “Gamer,” found box office magic with their take on the answer to that question.

The British Actress Rosamund Pike, played Maggie Greer in the film ‘Surrogates’ brilliantly. Pike, 32, was born and raised in London. She had a really brilliant standout role in a James Bond Film, ‘Die Another Day’. She has been on the acting scene since 1996. Her parents, Caroline and Julian Pike were both professional musicians, and Pike has publicly said that she always heard music in her home, growing up, and it got her acting bug activated at a very early age. Her parents traveled the world with Rosamund when she was very young, trying to get musical gigs, they would go wherever they could could get work, Rosamund went with them until she was about 8. She speaks
French and German because of all that traveling around she did when she was young. She brings with her that wide world sophistication, to her all of her acting parts, and it really sets her apart from other actors she appears on the screen with. She started her academic education at Oxford University in England. She would drop in and out depending on what roles she was cast for. She finally went back to Oxford and completed her degree in 2001.

There are several reasons fan flocked to the theaters to watch Surrogates. A couple of the major box-office draws were a fantastic cast, such as Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames plus an intriguing movie trailer. With all the crime in the world, who wouldn’t want to stay in the safety of their domicile while “living” through their surrogate robot?

Bruce Willis is always a big box-office draw for the movies he is featured in. He has still has a large fan base of both men and women in all age groups due to his varied movie rolls, like the Die Hard movies, Red, and the Expendables. Ving Rhames joined forced for a second time with Bruce; the first was in Pulp Fiction. Once again, they make excellent onscreen enemies with a twist in the end. Other cast members include greats, such as Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe, James Francis Ginty, James Cromwell, and many others.

The next thing that had fans flocking to the theaters to see Surrogates was the movie trailer. It shows “perfect” human specimens doing great things, like mountain climbing, sky diving, and such then shows that they are actually high-tech robots; Robotic Human Surrogates. This right there grabs the viewer’s attention in the first 24 seconds. It first promotes the benefits of surrogates: beauty, grace, and safety then goes into the murder mystery hook locking in the audience.
